  • 93 Z28 auto trans shifter question...

my other 2 93 Zs had a shifter that was inline as 1,2,D,OD. Now this one I just got is 2,D,OD. What is the difference in the performance shifter option>? Is there a plate or 1st gear shift blocker under the console? I like to shift to 1 if I can. TIA

The cars with the 2.73 gears have a block mounted to the side of the shifter to keep it from going down into first. GM did this because the 2.73 geared cars would not pass the noise emissions when it was in first gear. The cars with the optional gears would pass so they didn't get the blocks.

I took a hack saw blade and cut the block off of the side of my shifter.

If you didn't get the "performance" package, you didn't get a selectable 1st gear, but it is still there if you modify the shift indicator plate/stop. It also means you have the 2.73 rear gears and 110mph speedo, instead of the 3.23gears and 150mph speedo that came with the performance package/Z-rated tires. You will also have a top speed limiter (approx 110mph)

Interesting. Mine has the 2.73 gears and the non selectable 1st gear but it does have the 150 speedo in it. I wonder if they chnged that in 95. I bought the car from a guy here at work and I asked him if he had it changed and he said no. He bought the car brand new so I know no one has changed it.
