  • Traction Control Question/Problem

Since the demise of my 95 Formula I have bought a 96 Z28 A4. This car has ASR (traction control) which my other car did not. Well it seems to work very well to prevent wheelspin but I can't seem to disable it. When you press the ASR button and the ASR Off light comes on it still will not let me spin the rear wheels even if I floor it from a stop. Is it possible the ASR is not disabling? The engine runs very strong and seems just as powerful as my Formula but when I floored my Formula from a standstill it would smoke the tires no problem and it had the crappy 2.73 gears where my Z has 3.45s. Also my AIR Pump needs to be replaced(recall item) could that be affecting this. Any help from the F-Bod Gurus would be greatly apreciated. Thanks in advance....Later

First, unless you've replaced the rear gears, autos came with either 2.73's or 3.23s with the GU5 performance rear gear option.
Try a brake torque.... put the car in gear with your left foot on the brake, the right foot on the gas. Floor the throttle and after about a second, release the brake. If the tires don't spin, you've got a problem.

First off, It's called power braking. Does that show my age?

The anti lock system over rides the ASR system. Just touching the brake pedal enough to get the lights to light will dissable the traction control. If while the brakes are lightly pressed, the car won't spin the tires, there is another problem as Joe says. If it does spin the tires, Sounds like there is a problem with the system. I think there is a relay for it under the hood and probably a fuse somewhere although I would think if either are bad, that it would be off and smoke the tires.

      Let us know what happens.

Uh huh. LOL..... I'm right there. I thinks you are older by about 3 months.

I tried the brake gas thing and it imediately started to spin the wheels but I didn't want to do a full on brake stand where I was(cops are really bad around here). Maybe I'll find a safer place to do it tonight when I get off work. It definately felt the same as with the ASR on when I floored it. About the gears, the guy I bought it from said it had 3.45 gears so maybe he switched them or something. He seemed to know his F-Bod stuff pretty well. Is there a MPH RPM calculator or something that I can do to find out what gears are in there exactly? Thanks for the reply.....Later

In the old days, we would jack up the rear and count how many times the driveshaft revolved with one revolution of the rear wheel. Fred probably has a fancy formula to do it without getting your hands dirty. The other alternative is pulling the rear cover and counting the ring and pinion gear teeth. In doing a gear swap, he would have had to get a speedometer correction module or reprogram the computer for the gear change or the auto trans would be giving you fits.

At least you know that you can spin them.

When I first got my 96 WS6 M6 I thought I had a problem because it wouldn't spin them in first without help from a quick release of the clutch. I can get some sqeal on a smoother surface but still think it should do better with all that torque. I know it has bigger tires than stock TAs, but I still wonder if I have a small power transfer issue since I have never driven another WS6 6spd with stock gearing.
