  • SES light always on

when i bought my 97 camaro 3.8L V6 Y87 it was throwing two codes.
The first was p0302, cylinder two misfire. And an ignition code that relates to the cylinder two misfire (im not sure of the exact code). Since the purchase date i have fixed all misfire problems (coil packs, spark plugs, spark plug wires, thermostat, water pump, and radiator). The car drives like it has 50K on it, and not the 100K that it actually has. I feel no misfires at any temp, any RPM range, or any amount of load. I pulled the PCM fuse, ive disconnected the battery for 10 minutes, and the light is still on. I'm conviced that there is no more misfire. The computer was replaced roughly 30k miles ago, but id image the car was driven with the misfire for a decent amount of time. Could this be the computer, or someother problem?

Have it scanned to determine the code and you won't have to guess.

        persistant scan codes

Take your car to autozone or a friend with a good scanner and ask them to clear the codes. If the SES comes back on and you believe there really is no misfire, then the next logical step is to determine what sensor is responsible for the bogus signal. Something must get feedback from the ignition module and/or spark distribution system that gets polled by the pcm.

Please continue to post what you find.

Make sure you are not getting spark arc on cylinder number 2. Just because the car appears to be runing normal does not mean that there is no ignition problem in route to the #2 plug.

I just went though this very same process with a friend at work. His Malibu is throwing the same code, same cylinder and the entire ignition system from plugs to coil pack has been replaced. The only thing that I can think of is that perhaps an injector is fouling. Those don't last indefinately. Try swapping injectors around and see if the misfire follows the an injector to the new cylinder. If so, you've found the cuplrit. There also could be carbon build up in the cylinder left over from the previous problems. Perhaps a can of seafoam though the intake system might help as well.

for anyone who is intrested, i finally got my SES light to turn off the other day. Turns out that the scanner at autozone was reading the old codes, the codes that were being stored and not presently being thrown. My buddy works as a mechanic for chevy and we brought it into the dealership. Turns out my computer had to recalibrate the crankshaft position sensor. The idiots at autozone were just reading off old codes, and not bringing up the new one. Well i got closure on the situation, figure id let you guys know. Merry Christmas!
