When i get on the gas in my 96 z28 about 5 grand it kinda stutters. not bad but just like misses. I just bought it and i'm fixin to do a tune up on it. any other suggestions would help.

how many miles on it? From what I've read here that could be a sign of the opti going bad, and if your going to replace that definately do the water pump as well. Could also be the plugs and wires, depends on mileage and when the alst time those items were serviced.

well the car has about 116k on it. it runs real good. but once it hits 5 grand it misses. not a lot. i herd it might b the coil and the coil wire. how much does that stuff run?

Coil and coil wire are cheap and can be bought at any local auto parts store. If your car has never had a tune up its time. Coil, coil wire, plugs, and wires. From what your describing though I'm sorry to say but it sounds like your opti is going. I'd start with a tune up and also pop your hood when its dark and look for any arching coming from the wires or coil.

If you haven't done anything in the way of ignition system maintenance for 116K miles, now is the time to do it. While the Opti can be a problem, I wouldn't just jump to the conclusion that its the problem. There are numerous components that can cause the same problems, and you need to systematically eliminate each possibility. From a cost point of view, start with the cheaper ones. Plugs and wires are mandatory. IC Module needs to be added to the items listed in posts above. Cleaning the injectors might help.

Have you ever had the PCM scanned? You can learn a lot about the condition of the car from a good scan.

I had the exact same problem for a few years and eventually replaced everything. Plugs, wires, opti, coil, ICM. It turned out to be the ICM.
Just as Fred said, though, you need a systematic approach, as it could be any of those.

The ignition control module is going to run you around $60.

You can scan it via a handheld scanner. Or if you have a laptop, you can buy an interface cable and use software called TTS Datamaster to read what's going on. Thanks to Fred, he has an awesome write-up on what the scan readings mean: http://members.aol.com/InjuneerZZ/ScanMast.htm

Couldn't he just have it scanned at autozone or was 96 when they had the obd1 connector and obd2 pcm or something
The opti or optispark is the distributor that is used on LT1 cars. If you get under the car and look up at where the water pump is you can see where the spark plug wires go on the distributor. Due to it's placement right under the water pump and all of the hoses It tends to get wet if a water pump or hose goes out. Water + optispark =

Autozone or some other parts store will scan it, but all they will tell him is if there are codes stored in the computer. While that may be useful, he won't really know what's happening during those misses unless he gets the laptop and software or someone who has it.

Optispark is the distributor. It's a good system but was placed in a bad spot. It's prone to getting wet and that corrodes the inner workings and messes with the optical sensor. When you buy a car at 116k you have to assume of this stuff was ever touched, so as was said I'd do a complete tuneup. Even if the Opti isn't your problem it wouldn't kill you to change it anyhow if you've got the money.

Man This sucks. I went to church today and the car ran fine. Got out of church and driving back home the car was fine. I get to my house and shut the car off and all the sudden everything goes dead. Just like that. I try to start it and it totally dead. Nothing no lights no nothing. I was fixin to go eat and lucky me my dads car is here. So i go eat and come back. I get inside and hear this ticking coming from the behind the glove compartment. For some reason it stops when i turn on the lights or the ignition. I have a little power back and i have lights and everything seems ok. then when i go to start the car and push the clutch and turn the key everything shuts off again. Like a circuit breaks or something. then nothing. I'm thinkin mayb battery, alternator, or starter. I'll try to jump it in the mornin. Its really cold here too. Any other suggestions or anything let me know. I hate that. It was working fine one minute and the next its totally dead.
