I was wondering which is better, X pipes or Y pipes. does one add more horsepower or one sound better?

What kind of car are you talking about? You will have a hard time getting an X pipe under a 4th gen F-body because of clearance problems.2002 Electron Blue Vette, 1SC, FE3/Z51, G92 3.15 gears, 308.9 RWHP 321.7 RWTQ (before any mods), SLP headers, Z06 exhaust, MSD Ignition Wires, AC Delco Iridium Spark Plugs, 160 t-stat, lots of ECM tuning

Z pipes are the way to go in our cars. Hard to find, but you can probably have a local exhaust shop fab one up for you.
Actually, an 'X' pipe is used on true dual cars, whereas a 'Y' pipe is used on ours, as they only have one pipe running to the muffler, then into Dual exhausts...
