  • Rust!!!!

i have plenty of reasons to believe that my 82 t/a was neglected by everyone of its previous owners. when i got it there was patches of rust. some have been halted just by waxing, but some areas (THE MORE NOTICEABLE AREAS) went into a process of IMMENSE accelleration, the areas r mostly concentrated on the driverside rear quarter panel. wuts an estimate if done by a reasonable bodyshop?

We need pics to see what the extent is. And even then we will just be guessing. Someone would really need to be able to look at the car to give a good estimate.

I live in the rust belt, and never drive my "nice" cars in the salt. I do this to avoid rust, and help keep the miles off them, but mostly to avaid the rust. I hate rust, it really gets me down. It's like a rotting cancer, a total death sentance for a car. The only way to really fix it is to remove the infected metal and replace it with new metal. This means replacing floor pans, fenders, quarters... Ugh.

To take a car that is beginning to rust and try fixing the rust on a spot-by-spot basis on a budget will be a never ending hastle. Every year you will be noticing new spots that need attention. The body will end up being full of repairs that will only last so long. Rust repairs are pretty temporary, unless you actually replace the panel the rust will come through again a a couple years. It is depressing. I hate rust.

After a few years of messing around with trying to keep ahead of it, what you have is a car full of short term repairs, like little sins hiding all over it to be a problem again in the future. You know they are there. If you are anything like me, it will bug you to know they are there.

Sorry for the rant, I've been fixing rust spots on a car I'm trying to fix up and sell and i've got rust-hate on the brain this morning. Have I mentioned that I hate rust??

Anyhow, to answer your question... I'd expect to pay $4-500 or more to have the rust repaired and the panel refinished. That should include some welding in of new metal to fill the holes. If you care about the car that is.... If you dont really care about the car just bondo over them.

If they weld in new metal, try and coat the backside of the repair with por15 afterwards.
