today i noticed my oil press about just a hair above the red. i had been driving for about half an hour in traffic, and then i went WOT and it only went to about 40... i haven't ever really noticed til today

how concerned should i be about this?
What is the normal oil pressure at operating temp?
    thanks for the quick reponses

the car in ur sig? could be the gauges, GM gauges have never been known to be accuate. also could be the sending unit going south. or too thin of oil, try some 10w-30 or 20w-50

Normal pressure at fully warm idle should never be below 15. I'd be pretty concerned Are there any other noticable symptoms?

Well since you just posted in another thread that you have been using a quart a month due to a suspected intake manifold leak, I think you already may have your answer. Likely low oil level.

i have been keeping a very close eye on my oil level though and the day i noticed the low pressure i checked it and it wasn't less then a 1/4 of a quart low and i refilled it and the pressure never picked up.

one of the mechanics at my work mentioned that there was a bulliten on these motors collecting sludge or debris in the oil passage ways and i should flush the motor with diesel fuel.
or is there something else that i could do?

It is possible but not likely that you have some honing slurry mixed in with some other carbon related sludge in the oil galley close to the pump. It could also be a defective oil pressure sensor.

The more likely culprit would be the pickup screen on your pump being clogged or your actual pump going bad.

change ur oil to 20w-50 and if the pressure picks back up, it the pump
