  • Hi, I need help

Hello, I am new here. I own a 98 S10(v6 5sp), and a 99 mercury sable. I am in the process selling the s10 and am looking at an 88 TA with a tpi 350+.080, t-tops, and 82k miles. The car has one problem I am hoping you guys can help me out with. The car will not go any faster than 35mph. It cannot be the cat(doesn't have one), and I am unsure whether it is the 700r4 or what else it could be. I know the tranny in it is the factory unit and the car was originally a 305tpi car. The engine has less than 10k miles and it already has a 5.7L computer and chip installed. I figured I would tap the minds of you all for a little help. I really like the car and my friend purchased it 3 years ago at 52k miles, and he is an ase cert mechanic. He just doen't want to mess with it anymore....he replaced the injectors, plugs, wires, fuel pressure regulator, and then the distibutor cap and rotor. We are puzzled and he doesn't feel like a tranny swap so I have a chance to buy it for cheap. Thanks in advance for all the help.

p.s. Is there any difference in the tpi runners and tranny from a 5.0L to a 5.7L????

I dont think there is any difference in the runners or tranny the 305 and 350 were fairly identical on the outside, however if the tranny has never been rebui;t and it has a lot of miles on it, then it may not be shifting inot the higher gears.

How many miles are on it? If the computer has been changed and done properly it probably isnt that. is there a service engine light on at all?

Maybe get it checked out by a transmission shop adn see what they think

Thanks, it is an 88TA with 82k miles on it. As far as I know the tranny is the stock one. It seems to just not shift out of 1st gear. The fun thing will be trying to get the car to a transmission shop. I think I will just call around and then take it out myself and take the tranny alone in. I will only have about 600 to play with the tranny, the car absolutely needs subframe connectors, and I'd like to eventually do a rollcage. Anyways, you guys have any suggestions? Thanks again.

???? I have no idea on the mechanics of fbody's or thier tech terms such as that, the only way I know things is by doing it. I am guessing that you are talking about the cable from the shifter to the transmission, right? Thanks for that other site, that may help......I hope that is all it is since I don't really want to pay more than 600 on a tranny rebuild....lol. Thanks again guys

edit: So it is the cable that goes to the throttle body and then back to the tranny....I get it now. Thanks guys, I'll check it out when I'm home this next weekend.

The TV cable is the cable that controls the position of the throttle blades. www.thirdgen.org has a wealth of info on thirdgen f-bodies and they have a write up on how to adjust the TV cable. I would suspect it's the tranny though. There are a ton of people at thirdgen.org who have swapped in a 350, so I'm sure you might find more help there then here. Most of us are 4th genners. I used to have an 88 TA, but it's been so long ago now that I'm not much help with them anymore.

My vote is for the tv cable. I thought mine was out of adjustment and messed with it. I did it wrong and the car would not shift out of 1st until 5500 rpms. It was only out of adjustment by 2 clicks but when I properly adjusted it it made a world of difference. http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php This article has way too much information on the tv cable. The TV cable is on the driver's side of the throttle body and with the pictures in the article you should be able to find it.
