  • Should I send a 1999 car to the junk yard?

    Hey,
I have a camaro, so I always come here first when I have a car question.

My girlfriend has a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. It's a 4 cylinder coupe with 81K miles. She hates it because it's had so many problems, so we need to get rid of it, and I wanted it to be in running order before trying to sell it, so I had it towed to a local repair place to get it fixed. The guy said it's got problems with two cylinders, and it needs a new exhaust valve and intake valve. I already spent $600 getting a new fuel pump into it, and he's telling me it will be $2600 to get the engine + miscellaneous (fluids, etc.) fixed. I found another place that said they could put in a used engine for $2000. I called an auto dealer who is going to call me back to tell me how much they would buy it for, non-working. I'm thinking of putting it on ebay with a minimum bid of the amount that I can get from the dealer or the repair shop. Kelly blue book says it's worth $2500 for trade in or $4000 from a private party. On top of all of this it's got a broken passenger side window. I'd like to try and get at least $1000 for it to recoup my expenses for the fuel pump and to get her some money. Please tell me you have some ideas!

    thanks!

    Josh

I'd part it out on ebay and get what you can from it, if the dealer offer is less than $1,000...

Even if you spend $2000 fixing it, and sell it for $4000 you are ahead.

I doubt if you want to fool with parting it out, or getting a few bucks for it not running.

So, on car-parts.com you can find an engine from $500 bucks to $1250 for this car (same as a Chev Malibu) from a local wrecking yard, then get someone at the yard to replace it for a couple of hundred bucks in the evening or weekend. In some areas the wrecking yards will even do it.

Clean it up, get everything working, window, a/c, etc and unload it for the 4K.
