  • Hatch Struts

How difficult is it to replace the hatch struts on a 2001? A couple of nights outside at minus 15 cold seems to have shortened the life of the struts. One of them is leaking its fluid and the hatch wont stay open, so its time for new ones.

I noticed that when looking up the GM part #s the right one is about double the price of the left, but both are the same size. Why? Is the right one stronger or something?

I think it should be as easy as two bolts but I don't see them.

The top of the strut is attached by a socket and ball stud. There is a locking clip that hold the strut's socket end onto the ball stud. Simply insert a small flathead scewdriver and pry back the locking clip to remove the ball socket.

The bottom of the strut is bolted to the body by a T-50 torx bolt. You may have to pull back or separate the sail panel to get to that bolt. There is also a little rubber boot covering the bottom of the strut.

I'd head down to your local auto supply and get a new pair of hatch struts.

Well, you're right. I did get a T-50 and pulled back the sail panel but that damn bolt was so friggin tight it would not budge. Took it down to my local shop - it was easy for them! Damn. why does that always happen to me.

BTW, I did end up getting a pair from salvage. I looked up the part numbers painted on them and they're from a 93-02 Firebird not a Camaro - but its ok because the Firebirds' hatch is pretty much the same. or at least looks the same! it (hatch) felt like it weighed a ton- any idea how much that thing weighs?
