  • Exhaust cutout.....

My Z still has the stock exhaust and it is way too quiet. ( I was used to a flowmaster catback on my Formula) Eventually I want a loudmouth but untill then I was thinking of adding a cutout for the track and when I just want a loud exhaust for a while but still be able to cap it up for when I take the girlfreind somewhere. Does anyone know what this sounds like? I know it'll be pretty loud but does it sound good? I don't want it to sound like a truck that muffler fell off of, if you know what I mean. Also is there any difference in sound if the cutout is placed at the rear of the exhaust, right before the miffler, instead of in the middle of the car? It seems to me the rear exit would be better sound wise, in the car, less resonance possibly? Also is there any performance benefit or just the kind of SOTP brain trick because it's louder? Any help will be greatly apreciated....Thanks in advance......Later

I don't need it to be motorized although that would be pretty cool. I was thinking something along the lines of the ones shown here. http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...xplanation.htm

I'll just cap it and uncap it manually for now. This is really just a cheap way to get a little noise out of my exhaust untill I save up for a loud mouth. I'm just curious how it sounds and if anyone has noticed any gains with this mod. Thanks again......Later

Actually I want both This would just be a temporary thing untill I can afford the loudmouth. I just wanted a little more sound/performance untill I can work the loudmouth into the budget and this is pretty cheap to do. Will this give me no performance gain? Do you think I shouldn't waste my time with this? Oh BTW how is the loudmouth on the highway? Does it drone alot? My Formula had a flowmaster CB and it droned quite a bit. Thanks.....Later

I wouldn't waste your time with a cut-out unless you were going to get an electric one to be controlled with a switch inside the car... it really isn't that terribly expensive... but if you get one that you manually have to cap and un-cap... I am sure there will be times when you find yourself saying, "man, I really wish I could just flip a switch right now" -- especially when some ricer revvs up at you

As far as loudness goes... When I did my cat-back swap, I had to pull the car into the garage overnight with no cat-back system on (which would basically produce the same effect as a cut-out). It wasn't nearly as loud as I expected. And it wasn't nearly as loud as I am now -- with long-tube headers and no catalytic converters - even though I am still going through a muffler. Basically, what i am saying is those catalytic converters will muffle A LOT of sound. I don't think you would be "too" loud with a cut-out, as long as you still have the factory exhaust manifolds and cats. If you would consider that to be too loud -- oh man, don't go anywhere near my car

            Best of luck with everything.

Thanks for the reply. I like loud most of the time or at least louder than stock. Too loud around here and the cops will start harassing you. This'll just be a temp thing untill I can get a real exhaust. It is nice to rev back at ricers but that really dosen't come up much. Last time I had a import try me it was one of those new Tiburon GTs and I just stomped it and had a car length on him by the time I hit second and then drove the speed limit. I don't mess around, even like that, any more on the street. In FL they take your butt to jail for anything they consider street racing and thier definition can be very liberal and good luck fighting the charge. Hmmm I'll see what the muffler shop wants to do it. If it's under $30 or so I'll do it just for $h%ts and giggles. Later....
