  • How do you inspect waterpump for wear?

i pulled my waterpump yesterday and have a few questions... how do you inspect it for unacceptable wear? the impeller spins with a little bit of resistance but definately not seized or anything... the male and female splines seem fine but like i said im not sure what to look for for "wear" on these components... thanks...

    Chris,
I would verify that the bearing and bearing seal are OK. You'll know the bearing seal is shot if the pump leaked coolant out of the weep hole prior to you removing it. Next check the drive shaft for looseness. You shouldn't be able to move it side to side at all. Check that it is quiet when the drive shaft is spun.

Warren summed it pretty well. You can also pull the inspection cover to inspect the impellar and impellar housing.

But.....since you already have it off, might as well just replace it.

The lifetime guarantee ones from Autozone are $65, pretty much the same at the other guys too. Since getting at it takes awhile, its pretty much a no brainer to get a new one.

This is the only way I knew my pump was dyin! Cause there was now water left in my radiator!
