  • Engine Blown.......Suggestions Anyone?

I just replaced the timing chain and cranked it up before doing the head gaskets and the engine is knocking really bad - it's coming from the front part of the engine. I took it to a local f-body specialist (The Hot Rod Store) and they concluded that the motor needs to be replaced.

This is too big of a job for me so I'm going to take it in. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as internal upgrades (while they're in there)?

I would say a 355ci forged internals with low compression pistons, then save up for a supercharger and/or nitrous....just my opinion

I would also go with a 355 ci setup and send the heads out to be worked and a custom cam done by either elliot port works or AI.

I saw a 98 LS1 engine for sale on ebay right now with all the wiring harness and everything. Why not look into it.

It is alot easyer to build up a lt1 engine and put it back into a f-body that is ment for it then to try to fit a diffrent engine into a lt1 f-body. It isn't just the engine that you will replace. It isn't worth the cost. If you want a LS1 f-body then buying 98+ f-body ends up being the thing to do.

By doing some work to your engine you can have it smoke LS1 cars for a fraction of a cost of fitting in a diffrent engine. It all comes down to how much you want to spend.

You can also get a used stock lt1 block and replace yours with that, I saw one on ebay a few months back for 500 bucks.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! The shop's gonna give me several quotes including just a new stock motor and upgraded cam / piston set-ups. I can't wait to get this monster back on the road again. Now I know how drug-addicts feel - I need my rush!

Hey Darrin, stay away from the Hot Rod Store. Those guys are crooks. I can't even begin to tell you how many local racer's they have screwed. We just finished up our '67 Camaro that was in our shop so we have a bay open now. Give me call on my cell I gave you in that PM a while back and let me know what you want done with the motor. I'll also give you directions to our shop so you can come visit if you like. You can check out some of our cars too.
