Hey Everyone,
I started a new thread because the old one was getting LONG.

I am picking up the car tonight! I got to see it last night and it looks GREAT! I cant wait to get it back together. I will get pics up on the website either tonight or tomorrow morning. Stage 1 Complete.

Very nice, I really like how you had the door and hood hinges painted. I see they painted the door jambs on the chasis, did they paint the jambs on the actual doors too?

Yes, I can imagine. It's like being a little boy on Christmas morning.

I'll be getting my car out of storage in a couple more weeks. I feel just the same way when I uncover it for the first time after 5 months of it being gone.

I really enjoy following your project. I'd like to have a nice 3rd gen convertible. Thanks for all the great pictures!

Just out of curiosity, what are you going to do with the carpet and floor?

I had a car repainted back in Switzerland. To keep the cost down, I removed the carpet and stripped all the rubber and stuff glued to the floor myself. I removed all the rust that accumulated and then painted the whole floor. The carpet wasn't too bad and could be cleaned up.

Ive got a new carpet to go in. I left the old one in there so if it gets paint on it, I wont have to kill anyone at the paint shop.

Found some cancer. Take a look at the pic and give me your thoughts. The pic doesnt really do it justice. The rust isnt all the way through the metal... But its close. The outter layer of sheetmetal is completely gone in some spots.

You've got a couple of options here. First of all, you could cut all that out and form new metal to go in it's place. Considering where that is, I don't know that I would attempt that myself, unless I was a specialist at that kind of stuff. If it was a quarter panel, or some other non-load bearing place, it's feasible for a newbie to attempt it, but that is kinda an important spot.

Second, you could wire wheel as much of that out as you can. Then grind out what won't come out with the wire wheel. You can then fiberglass over all of that, which will leave the metal as the structure while the fiberglass will add strength and filler to it. Now I can't really see how bad that is, so it may be too far gone to do this, but if it's just the outer layer as you say, it should hold up fine.

The above two situations are if you want it to come out showroom quality.

If you ain't really worried about it, the least I would do is POR-15 it. This is a three stage rust treatment product that is widely recognized as the best available. It cleans, etches, then adds a protective coating over the metal to seal it and prevent any further rust growth. The thing is, this stuff isn't all that smooth, unless sprayed, and even the company itself recommends you not do that. So, if you do go this route, you'll have to POR-15 it and then body filler over that. Now, given the area we are talking about, body filler is going to eventually crack, so you could do this as a "redneck" solution. But considering what all you've done to the car so far, I don't think you want this option.

Sand blast it.....If after you are done you can see it goes all the way through then the only way to truly get rid of it is to rplace the metal. Judging by the picture I can pretty much guess it is all the way through. Plus if the outer layer of sheetmetal is all the way through then that means the rust is on the back side too.
