  • Scanning software

I've done some searching and I am still confused on how to properly get something so i can just read everything in my pcm on my laptop. I want t order an AKM cable or find one used. I will need the OBDII and USB port one for my laptop. As far as the scanning programs, I downloaded Auto-Tap version 3.00, it was on there website under the download section and did not cost any money. Will it work when I plug in a cable or do I need something else?

It is very common for OBDII owners to convert to OBDI. I've always thought it was for this very reason... OBDI is easier to scan and modify.

The conversion is pretty easy.. Just plug in a OBDI pcm.
I could be totally wrong here, but this is what I've gathered from the little reading I have done.

Once you are OBDI, you can use FreeScan. You will not pass vehicle emissions any more after the swap, but you can always put your original PCM back in for the smog test.

You can pull a lot of usefull data out of an OBD-II PCM, including misfire counts by individual cylinders. With the "enhanced GM parameters" version of AutoTap, you can pull hundreds of different items. You can't get anywhere near that amount of info out of an OBD-I PCM. Add to that the fact that you can create your own digital or analog dashboard on your laptop screen, and the OBD-II scan tools leave the OBD-I stuff in the dust.

Take a look at what's available.

have I been out of the game that long. Not sure if I read that correctly, but am I seeing that you can download software to your lap top so that you can connect it to your cars pcm? If so where do I get this, and the cables to adapt it with? Can this be done with any lap top?

I can't agree more with Fred. OBD-II has the ability to detect component degredation, something OBD-I doesn't do. The misfire monitor is also another important part of OBD 2. The amount of information you can pull out of OBD 2 is way more than you will ever see from OBD 1. I just finished 12 weeks of engine management at school, and after working with both OBD's, OBD 2 pid's (parameter identification) make it so much easier to try and isolate and figure out problems, as well as having a good knowledge on how your engine is running.

Not only can you hook up your laptop and look into the guts of the engine management system, with the EFILive version of AutoTap, you can also change the program (LSx family of engines only). And there are better tools out there than that. The HP Tuners stuff is supposed to be amazing.

I would realy like to start learning one of these programs. I know that I can read alot of the older posts and informational sites to understand a little bit of it, but do they make a free scanner tool for the OBDII. I really am interested in finding if I have knock retard and if my 02 sensors are reading correctly because of this tiny exhaust leak.

Those are all OBD-II programs and will work with any OBD-II PCM's, meaning it includes the 96/97 LT1's. For the OBD-I LT1's you can use, Freescan (free), TTS DataMaster (free for first 20 scans) and EGFLive V4 for scanning.

You can program OBD-I LT1's with TunerCat or LT1_Edit. There are also versions of both those for OBD-II.

I'm not aware of any free OBD-II scanning software downloads.
