  • Rear brakes...

hows it goin guys? long time no post but...

rear rotors are shot on the 2000 V6. this will be my first brake job on the 4th gen Firebird.
are the rear rotors floating or pressed on? -and- does the rear caliper require any special tools to push the piston back in? -and- any tips or road blocks in doing this? rear rotors are original (64k mile car) fronts were replaced 2 years ago @ 42k (fronts were original) fronts were done at a shop because i didnt have a house with a garage.
now i have a house and will FINALLY be doing my own work again.

    thanks guys!

Other then a couple of retainer clips there is nothing there. Just pull the caliper and the other housing off. Spray some wd40 or any other rust remover on it. If you have a nice size puller it will be the easiest to get them off. But if not just hit the thing off with a decent size hammer. Hope its not rusted in.

use a c-clamp to push the piston back in...easy job, 40 minutes flat for both sides.

cool deal. i doubt the rotors will be rusted on since it has never seen snow or salt. its a So Cal car its whole life! haha. i saw the retainer clips in another thread after posting this one, so that's easy. i have a BFH, 6 pack of Bud, and a 2 pump jack so i should have it done in 39 minutes

I did the rear pads on my '99 just a few months ago. It's a cake job. Once the wheels are off, there are 2 bolts holding the caliper on. Once that's off use the c-clamp to compress the piston. slide the pads out. Pop the retainer clips. Another 2 bolts for the caliper mounting bracket. You should be able to just pull the rotor off. There is a write-up at installuniversity.com I think. Check it out.

I'm surprised they're shot after only 64k. Mine are ok and I'm pushing 75k now. I understand replacing the front though. My '98 V6 front rotors warped after only 20k.
