okay guys, i took my passenger side head off last night and i looked down into cylinder 8 and there was oil laying on the piston. I believe it is a bad pistion ring(s). what do you think? could it be the head gasket? all of the other cylinders on that side are spotless.

If you took the head off it should be fairly easy to see the condition of the head gasket and if it is blown in any places, if you arent sure take a picture of it and post it up. Is it possible that oil got in it while you were removing other parts? I dont think it would be the head gasket though, usually that lets water in. Maybe it is sometheting with the valves or the head itself not sealing properly and letting oil through. Did it burn oil before you took off the head?-Dan

If you took the heads off you have to replace the gaskets anyways. You should see if any oil bypassed the gaskets. Take the gaskets off slowly and check under them in the area where the oil flows through.http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2317021/1

that is what makes me wonder...it wasnt burning oil before, it was normal driving when it was all together. so that tells me that the piston rings are fine. im bettin oil dripped down through the head, like you said. i dont know, i will inspect everything when i get home tonight..wont be for a while because im going to one job and then gettin off at 5:30 and going to my next job. but i will keep you guys posted. i will try to find my camera to get some pics up. thanks guysOriginally posted by FirebirdcrazyIf you took the heads off you have to replace the gaskets anyways. Oil does not flow through head gaskets. Only coolant. The oil from the valve train drains back into the lifter valley, not through the cylinder block decks.Originally posted by FirebirdcrazyIf you took the heads off you have to replace the gaskets anyways. If oil got in the cylinder it came from 1 of three places:
1) past the rings
2) past the valve seals or guides
3) it may have gotten in the cylinder when you removed the head, splashed in from the lifter valley maybe?
Can you post a picture of that cylinder bank?Tracy

It's either a worn valve guide or valve stem oil seal.
When oil gets by the rings, it is still burned off and there wouldn't be any visible residual oil on top of the piston.

well, im hoping i just dropped some oil somehow when taking everything off, yet i cant think of anything i took off that would have had oil in it, but anything is possible. i will try to take some pics tomorrow and try to figure out how to put them on here..until then im going to bed...lol i got four hours of sleep last night, went to school, went to work, got off of that job and went to my other job...im beat, later guys. keep my engine is prayers!Originally posted by fastTAIt's either a worn valve guide or valve stem oil seal.

It's possible that you flipped over the head just enough to drop some oil into the cylinder from the top of the head. oil puddles in top of the cylinder head, especially on the outside edge.Originally posted by 94formulaLT1well, im hoping i just dropped some oil somehow when taking everything off, yet i cant think of anything i took off that would have had oil in it, but anything is possible. i will try to take some pics tomorrow and try to figure out how to put them on here..until then im going to bed...lol i got four hours of sleep last night, went to school, went to work, got off of that job and went to my other job...im beat, later guys. keep my engine is prayers!

lol you guys are geniuses when it comes to lt1 engines, you probably know them like the back of your hand. after i thought about it for a little bit, i do remember seeing oil laying on the first and last bolt on the head, the two shortest bolts. i guess...i know..when i loosend them, the oil laying on thoe bolts dripped down onto the piston. this makes me happy because i really didnt want to do my bottom end this year, i would like too, but i just dont have the funds. top end is going to cost a few thousand on its own, and i would like to get the 383 stroker kit. that is going to be next year along with a procharger..
<--that will be me next year.
but yeah, no worries now. i got the drivers side head off last night and im ready to start on the front of the motor. taking the harmonic balancer off, opti (replacing it with a msd or one of the good ones) timing chain cover, replacing the timing chain and gears with gm extreme timing chain..and then its to the cam, where im getting an oversized one. cant wait, i love the sound of a motor with an oversized cam idling
but now i have to go to work so i can pay all of my expenditures and im off to summit this week! thanks for your help guys and tell me what you think of my plans. later
