Would a 1LE or LS1 aluminum driveshaft be a bad idea behind 450 hp and a T56 on the street? This is on street tires, not drag radials.

I'm working on getting the car ready for the motor, and would like to get a aluminum driveshaft if it would be strong enough for the street on regular tires.. I dont ever plan on using drag slicks or anything like that.

The 450 hp is just an estimate. I'm working on building a 383 shortblock and puting a LE3 cam and heads on it.

From what I've read, the 1 LE aluminum shaft is suppoed to be a hair stronger than the LS1 shaft. Whether 450 HP is enough to break it depends on the luck of the draw. Some get by with it, others break it.

Thanks, I think I'll stick with my stock steel shaft for now.

Aluminum DS's are much stronger than they are made out to be. But, you will be making more power than 450 HP if you go with the LE3 package. More like 500 at least on a properly tuned and setup LE3 motor.

It really isn't the HP that is the concern, it's the torque load. On street tires, you'll probably be just fine.

That is what I was thinking. I'll never launch it at a dragstrip on slicks, all it will ever see is street radials and regular city/highway driving. I also dont ever power shift it. I always use the clutch and shift quickly. I guess if something breaks I'll have a reason to upgrade it. I intend to get a rear end girdle with preload bolts for the diff also.

I dont think it will ever get enough traction to hurt the driveshaft or rear end, the way I drive.
