  • Help please!

ok i'll start with saying I replaced my water pump over several months ago. Not sure that I put the right ammount of coolant in there. Any way when it got warmer, my temp went up to 260! OUCH. stoped it and checked the radiator.....very very low coolant. I filled it up and monitored it for several days. The radiator stayed a little low, so I continued to top it off. Mean while the reserve tank is staying at the full hot level. Now last week the reserve tank boiled over out the top? and the temp stays at or below 180 while staying at a good speed how ever when I get into town and slow down or sit at lights it gets close to 220est. Any ideas? could my radiator cap be bad? I don't know where to start. No coolant has leaked out except when the reserve tank boiled over out of the top. Its a 94 3.4. My next problem is a loud clicking noise when I start it up and it clickes for about 5 mins then goes away and is good the rest of the day, but the next day clicks again at first crank up. I'm scared shes going down and I'd be better off trading her in with my other car on a SS with alot less miles! Any help is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

The ticking could be your lifters where does it sound like its coming from?

The overheating sounds like you have an air bubble somewhere. I'm not very familiar with the 3.4's but if it has bleeder screws you need to bleed out the system if it doesn't have bleeder screws like most cars I always just leave the cap off while the vehicle is running and keep adding coolant until it quits taking anymore in. Becareful because it can bubble out hot coolant while doing that.

Check your pressure cap.... make sure it is holding rated pressure. Check the rubber overflow hose that goes from the radiator fill neck to the overflow reservoir. If that hose gets a hole or crack in it, it lets coolant flow out of the radiator when the system heats up, but does not allow the coolant to be sucked back into the radiator when the system cools down. Eventually the reservoir will fill up and overflow, and the radiator will no longer be full.

Might also want to have the coolant analyzed for combustion gasses - a sign that you've blown a head gasket. Check your oil for signs of coolant. Check the exhaust for the smell of burnt anti-freeze. Check the weep holes on the water pump for signs of drips.

clicking sounds like its coming from the drivers side near the spark plugs. could one of them be bad? or the wires?

Also checked my coolant this morning and its was a little low added a bit, cranked it up and it rose up to the top and some went into the reserve tank. drove it down the road. temp never went over 180. got home and the reserve tank boiled over. could it be that there is too much coolant in the system? how do I replace the hose on the reserve tank? the top is a clip the bottom is a metal stamped connection? never replaced a hose like that.
