  • Torque Thermostat Housing Bolts

Is it important to torque the bolts on the thermostat housing to 7 lbs. because I don't have a torque wrench. Can I just kind of go by feel? (I'll just see how much play is in them before I totally unscrew them. Do they strip if there too tight?) I ordered the MadZ28 tune, and a 160 Hypertech thermostat today. Hope I'm pleased. My HPP3 that I have had 5 years is for sale on EBAY if anyone is interested. Couldn't pass up the claimed extra horsepower/torque plus 160 thermostat. I should make a little bit of money off the deal after the HPP3 is sold on EABY! So its called FREE horsepower my kind of deal plus a little bit of cash!

Just snug them up. If you torque them, they might break. A lot of us were surprised by that happening, but now it's common knowledge not to use that spec.

89 lb. in. is the correct spec. That equals snug.

That's equals 7.4 # there. I'd have to look at the manual to see what it was that I torqued them to when it broke. Been about 6 years since I did that, so I can't remember what the number was. Just know the factory torque spec can break the t-stat hsg bolts. I got away way with it the first time I torqued them, the second time one broke off.

          Ok. I'll be careful!

If the car has been sitting for 20 hours does the system still need to be released of pressure? The Hypertech manual said just the 1 by the thermostat, but I heard somewhere else that both of them should be. Will 1 towel around the thermostat housing be enough, so moisture doesn't hit the opti?

It would be good to put a towel around the TS housing and one over the Opti. Go ahead and drain some coolant out of either the petcock valve in the radiator or the block coolant drain plug....just enough so that the coolant is down in the radiator below the TS housing. This will help to prevent as much coolant spillage as possible.

As far as venting the pressure, the motor will be cold and there will barely be any pressure left from sitting that long.

Did you use an lb-in torque wrench or a lb-ft when the bolt broke? Most lb-ft torque wrenches do not read below 20 lb-ft and are not accurate at all below that. I'm sure you know that, but just curious.

How do you get to the petcock valve? (Do I have to remove the splash guard underneath the car.) Which way is easier? My thermostat came today (Sat. very fast shipment) its in the open position. Shouldn't it be in the closed position for installation. If, so how do I fix it. Probably wont install until Tuesday want the car to sit for 24 hours, and my pcm from MadZ28 should be here by Mon., or Tue. Hypertech 160 stat Part #1008

I have a Proto in/lb wrench that I use for small stuff. I have 5 torque wrenches in all, and they are all calibrated on the Snap-on calibration machine at work in our metrology department.
