Sorry for what may appear to be a dumb question....

I need to replace the speakers in my 97 Trans Am. I have heard the back seat speakers can have the grill removed and one can replace the speakers very easily. I was wondering if the door speakers are the same way? Or do I need to remove the door panels to replace them?

    Thanks!

from when i did mine, i had to take off the door panel..i have a 94 so it is the same body style. its not hard, mostly time consuming for the first time. you have to figure out what comes out and what doesnt. but its simple. there are only like 4 or 5 screws, im not positive. just find all of the screws, pull up and there ya go. it takes a little finesse, make sure you dont break the clips on the other side..like i did. well, have a good time.

on my 97 V6 camaro the speaker replacement on the speakers in the backseat area were kind of a pain. I had 6 and a half inch speakers and getting them in took some fabrication. The mounts on my car had a slightly different size speaker that was in almost like a irreregualr sized mold (or mount). I went to best buy and bought plastice speaker mounts. Drilled the speaker mounts into the actual metal of the car. Then drilled the speakers into the mount, Hooked everythign up and popped the grill back on. Im not saying that this is the EXACT process you will have to deal with, just what i had to do to change my midrange speakers. So depending on the speakers they may be a bit of fabrication involved. Reply back, i thinking about replacing my door speakers... and am curious on what other people are doing to replace them.

If your car has the stock stereo, then its 6 1/2 for both doors and rear seats and im pretty sure its 5 1/4 for the rear deck, Its pretty easy to replace the rear seat speakers, the front doors are a little time consuming as stated. What kind of speakers are you looking into?

I would suggest component system speakers, especially if you plan to amp them, I did them on the front doors, ran the wires for the crossovers into the car and mounted them under the glove box and by the pedals so they wouldnt rust with the moisture in the doors, IMO they are well worth the few extra dollars over the regular 2 or 3 way speakers, but it all depends on what sound your looking for

          I appreciate the info.

As for what speakers I am looking for... Well, nothing all that powerfull. Basically I installed a Pioneer stereo in her a few years back. Since then, I manged to blow one of the rear seat speakers. Then the one on the drivers door I think is bad as well. I'm no stereo expert or anything like that though.

Anyway, Best Buy has these 6" round ones from Pioneer as well.

According to their fit checker, they claim these will fit in both the doors and back seat.

I am interested in the comment on installing them under the glove box and the pedal area. How does it look? Did you make something that they are installed in? Or did you just hang them somehow?

Thanks again for your feedback! Let me know if my speaker choice looks alright... (Remember, just have aftermarket head unit, no amps, crossovers, or anything like that)

The install came out very clean, The crossovers have holes in them for mounting screws so I just screwed it right into the plastic, I will post a pic later so you can check it out.

Pioneer makes a good speaker, What type of music do you listen to? I listen to hip hop, so I have alpine head unit and speakers because they are very good at getting all the notes for the voices while the sub is hitting all the low end notes, and with the crossovers, your seperating the frequencies so it makes it alot clearer. If you never plan to amp your speakers just go with 3-way speakers because they will be louder than the component systems

I have the Alpine SPS-171A, unamped, and am very happy with them

The tweeter in place of the stock, I took the cover off so you can see what the midrange looks like mounted in there
