  • nfb: need advise on used car purchase..

looking for a daily driver. i currently have a 95 lumina v6. it needs to go. its been a decent car. but need a good used car. i'm looking for a small v6 used (00-01) suv like ford escape , mazda tribute , ford sport trak or jeep liberty. anyone here have any of these vehicles? my worry is that even these small suv's with a v6 might not get me good fuel milege. i need to be at around 25mpg mostly highway driving. i also looked at a 4 cylinder pt cruser 05 same price as the other 01's and i'm sure i would get better gas milege than any of the other small suv's with v6's. all your imput very much welcome.

ur lucky if a hybrid suv gets 25hwy. my moms 01 sport 4.0L 4wd only gets 20 on the highway. look at some stratus R/Ts, Monte Carlos, and Grand AM GT. nice lookin cars and good gas mileage, i got a 02 Alero and am gettin 26-27 city driving. nearly 35 on the highway

If you must get an SUV, look at the Saturn Vue. You can get them in either a 4 or 6 cylinder. The used prices aren't too bad, and they are good cars.

Or try the first gen Toyota Rav-4. I think they have the same engine as the Corolla, and get excellent fuel economy. Check fueleconomy.gov for some other ideas too.

If you are set on a SUV disregard, but you may look into a midsize truck. I have a Colorado Z71 extended cab with the I5 and 3.73's and its gets 20-22 mpg, and for the size of the motor (211 cubes) it makes decent power 220HP 225ft lbs or torque.

I have seriously considered a Colorado/Canyon several times. I just dont think I would be happy driving a truck everyday. I am currently looking for a 01-03 Lincoln LS V6

While I think they've improved the reliability of Hyundai's, the thing that will kill you is depreciation. (Probably because they still have a bad rep from their debut in the USA market).

Any luck finding a Rav4? I know they are hard to come by cause people hang on to them.

No brainer here...a Pontiac Vibe GT.

I've got an 03. It gets about 30 mpg combined...about 33 mpg all highway.

With an 8700 rpm redline, 6-speed trans, 180 hp, 17" wheels on low profile z-rated tires...these cars are a blast to drive. And, becuase it's made by Toyota (with heads designed by Yamaha) ...she runs like a top.

Plenty of room for two adults and three kids...with room to spare in the hatchback area. These are great little cars. Look for one with the Nav. I can't live without mine!
