  • M6 inspection question

My new SLP clutch arrived today and I will soon be pulling the car apart to install it.

    My question is ths:

Is it easy to open up a T56 and inspect it inside? What would be involved? Is there a gasket I would need to replace? Is there a website with instructions? If I saw a damaged part inside would it be unrealistic to try and replace it myself? I'm not opposed to spending an hour in the Harbor Freight tool store if I need to.

If your a beginner, the T56 is not the one to start ripping apart. The best way to check it without opening a can of worms, is to turn the input shaft by hand. Run it through each gear. If you feel any roughness or binding, then look into getting into the unit. Thats a good easy basic check. Manuals are nice in that if they work on the bench, they will work in the car. Ripping into that T56 is not an easy task.

It is very complicated to tear down, or even to "look inside". Rob/Shoebox has the T56 maintenance manual on his website.

I think I'll stick with the bench checkup. Thanks for the advice.

I have a "spare" T56 left over from the days when my car was an M6. It has a noisy 4th gear. So I picked up a copy of the manual, figuring I could sell the tranny for about twice as much if it wasn't noisy. One look at the manual and the special tools required, and I decided to forget about it.

Nothing I have ever cracked into myself. Im not that confident either. I have helped my father with a few. He rebuilds them out of his tranny shop for the local f-body guys.

I had a chance to briefly hand check the trans, and it seems ok. I spun the input shaft in 1st, 3rd and 6th. Smooth as silk. I'll try the other gears after it is cleaned up a bit more. I can't believe how greasy the bottom of that car was. I think most of the grease was on me when I quit. It will be clean when I'm done! I cant wait to drive it with the new SLP clutch. The factory disk was almost to the rivets, and was beginning to seperate. I bet that is what was causing the noises. It was pretty loud at times. People would look at me and scowl, like I was driving some piece of garbage.

Did you get a new flywheel? I try to stay away from resurfacing. If its still flat (no grooves) hit it up with some emery cloth real good. Scuff the heck out of it.

The emery cloth scuffjob is in the plans. That is another task while I wait for the allignment tool to arrive.

i dont think you should "tear the car apart" just to change the clutch though.......... the windows are real hard to re-seat in the channels..........

I was told as long as I have the car this far apart I should change the blinker fluid and check the muffler bearings. I cannot find any references to these in my Haynes manual, is there a posting on how to do this? Does anyone have any pictures?
