New Speakers and Installation questions

Ok, so heres the idea... I'm planning on getting a 4 way AB amplifier for some side speakers to acompany my little bit of bass in the trunk of my 94 Camaro, since I'm more of a full quality system sort of guy and not just all for the loud bass. With the amp that I was looking at getting for the side speakers ill be putting out a decent amount of wattage to the side speakers (200W RMS 400W Max). The only 3-way side speakers I can find are 6x9's. I took out one of my rear speakers, an even though it may require some sheet metal cutting it will be fairly simple to put some 6x9s back there. The question is whether I can modify the door speakers to fit. Obviously I'll have to take off the door panels, but besides that I don't know although I'm sure it will require some modifying. Let me know if anyone out there has tried this or even though about it. BTW I have manual windows so the window crank is fairly close but I dont believe it will create a problem.

BTW atm I have some rockford phosgate 6.5"s that sound real good but are probably about 5 years old if anyone is interested.

I would recomend a component(woofer tweeter seperate) set up for the front--you don't have to cut to put in the 6.5 just a hole for the tweeter and it will have a lot more crisp sound. It really hits the highs

Side speakers? What side speakers, door or the rear or the trunk? When I did my stereo I replaced the front doors with pioneer 6.5's. I replaced the middle rear (next to the rear seats) speakers with a component system by blaupunkt. I mounted the tweeter in the cieling, one directly behind each front seat. If you are thinking of doing this, there are 2 perfectly sized holes above the headliner, to compensate for the depth of the speaker, as well as letting you align the tweeters perfectly without measuring a thing.

I ran 2 amps, a 4 channel, a 2 channel, with a capicitor and a fuse block (all items listed in for sale section). The subs were mounted in a custom box, it sounded great. Very clear with no distortion.

As far as the speakers in the trunk, in my opinion, they are a waste of money to replace and not needed for a good sounding car.





My advice : get speakers that fit directly, without cutting.

What do you mean by "little bit of bass in the hatch?".

Do you already have a subwoofer?
Does your Camaro have the Bose system?

If you are already running a subwoofer, there is absolutely no point in messing with putting 6x9"s in the car. All of your low bass should be coming from the subs, and filtered from the front four speakers so they can produce clear midrange and treble.

Go out and listen to various 6.5" speakers, and if you are looking for really good SQ - get components up front and a coaxial from the same family for the rear.

To a point:

- You COULD put 6x9"s in the back with cutting. It's not worth it though. If you just want more bass then some guys have actually cut and put in 8" subs. A true 8" sub with power will put out tons more bass than any 6x9" out there. Going this route though, you need to protect for some sound deadener. There are a lot of things to rattle and buzz around that sail panel area.

- You CAN'T put 6x9"s in the door. The speaker is mounted to a plastic bracket which is foam isolated and mounted to the door opening. To put a 6x9 in there you'd have to hack up your composite door (eek 1), hack up your door panels (eek 2), and you'd be in real danger of running out of room due to the glass mechanism (eek 3). Not worth it.

The fella above me looks to have a monsoon / ls1 type setup and they are a good bit different than LT1 years. I've had both years and worked on stereo's in quite a few 4th gens. I'll try to help the best I can. Base 94 stereos (not bose) are pretty simple to work with.

Speaking of the door speakers, how difficult is it to replace them? They make a vibrating noise on certain pitches of music which I assume is the speaker cone? I see that original replacements cost over $60 each!

What is in there depends on your car. They are all similarly easy to replace but the speaker type and wiring varies.

Year/make/coupe or vert/bose, monsoon or Delco base?

There are many options for greatly improved door speaker pairs at $60 or so.

But if you just have a occasional buzzing it might just a loose grille or something. The sound of a bottoming out speaker (bad speaker) is much different than a door / rattle / grille buzz.

well, maybe I described it wrong. I put my ear up to the speaker and held the panel, it still makes noise. Kind of on the low notes it breaks up. First it was the right door, now I hear it a little on the left one. the sail panel and rear speakers sound good.

this is a 2001 Camaro Coupe with the Monsoon system.
