  • Squeeling Noise (Possibly in the valvetrain)

Yesterday was cruise night at a town about 25 miles from my house. I fixed the intake manifold oil leak two weeks ago, but it still leaks a very small amount of oil from somewhere, so I check the oil before I drive it. It was running fine all day, and I didn't give it more than 1/4 throttle. Btw, I run Mobil 1 5W-30 full synthetic. When it is warm and idling, the oil pressure drops to around 12psi, but runs at 35psi when I'm driving.

On the way to the cruise night, my friend wanted me to pass him, so I floored it for the only time that night. Around 10 minutes after that, I could hear a squeeling noise, so I pulled over. It sounded like it was coming from under the intake manifold or under the driver's side valve cover. I checked the oil again, and it was full, so I left it, and towed it home today.

When I started it today, it didn't make the noise until it ran for around 10 seconds. I pulled the valve cover off, and adjusted all of the valves on the driver's side. When I started it up again, it was quiet for around 10 seconds again, then slowly got louder, so I shut it off.

It sounds like it is coming from cylinder #5, under the intake manifold. I think I'm going to pull it off tomarrow and see what the lifters look like. Hopefully I didn't spin a cam bearing. I think that it is something that reciprocates, because it is momentary, and makes more of a chirping sound. It is strange that it goes away after it sits, but comes back, almost like something isn't getting any oil.

Sorry for the long post, but I figure too much information is better than not enough. If anyone has any ideas or ways to figure out what it might be, I'd appreciate it. If there is something that I left out, just let me know.

Could be a marred roller wheel on the lifter. That is usually what makes the "chirping" sound you described. Could also be a slightly spun cam bearing which could also create slight oil starvation in some cases.

Did you also look at the rocker arms where they make contact with the pushrod?

I completely removed each rocker arm and pushrod and looked at them. I did them one at a time, so I didn't mix them up. The pushrods were not scratched at all. The divot that the pushrod fits in was shiny and smooth, but I don't know what they are supposed to look like. The balls that holds the rockers down didn't have any grooves on them except for the exaust valve on #7. There were four grooves that had a spiral to them. They looked like they were supposed to be there, but they were only on that one ball.

Also, one of the lifters was ticking really bad when the previous owner had it, but it has never done that for me. Could this be part of the problem. I think that he drove it for almost two years like that.

I found the problem. I guess that the roller on a lifter decided to lock up. It was for the exhaust valve on #7. I also replaced the intake on #5 and the intake on #6 because the roller would drag slightly at certain spots.

I started it up, and it doesn't chirp any more. It runs a little rough, so I'm going to adjust the valves again. They are much quieter than they were before. I'm sure that my cam is worn a little, but it only has to make it through the summer, because I'm planning on rebuilding it this winter. I also removed the rest of my AIR system, so I'm going to put the ram air box on my car too.

Here are some pictures of the #7 lifter:
