  • Door bangs...

    Hey everyone,

This is a 3rd gen problem, but it may relate to 4th gens. I forget how my 95 Z28's door latch worked. Anyway...

My drivers side door doesnt latch tight. When the door is latched, it will move around about 1/8-3/16". This doesn’t become a problem till I go over rough roads. IT IS LOUD! It seems that the door latch doesn’t hold the door tight to the bump stops. I replaced the latch and it didn’t help. I actually don’t want the door to be held against the stops because if it does, the door will not be flush with the quarter panel. I had the problem fixed temporarily by placing a 1/8” thick piece of rubber in between the bump stop & the body of the car keeping the door pushed out against the latch. Now that the car has new paint (And about 100 other new things on it) I dont want to use my ghetto fix anymore. How can I fix this problem the right way? Does GM make different thickness bump stops?

I sounds like its time for new hinge pins and bushings. After that you might have to realign the doors. Any good auto parts store should have them.

Brand new upper & Lower hinges. Door has been aligned. Visually, it looks perfect. Its just this darn banging.

Does the passenger door bang? if not, all you have to do is compare them and see what the difference is. Are the bump stops the same thickness? Does the latch have the same amount of play in it?

The passenger side doesnt bang at all. The stops are the same & the latches both have the same play. All I can think of is that the door has been replaced at some point & isnt a perfect match for the car.
