  • Jet-Hot Coating Question ?

I bought a pair of hedman headers that have been coated inside and out. I didn't realize at the time but i bought ones that did not have an 02 Sensor bung. I been thinking bout drilling it and having my buddy weld a ring on there but I am hesitant to because i dunno what the coating will do if we grind it off in that spot. Anyone have any ideas what might happen? I dont want it to peel or flake off or something. thanks

Its not "good" for the coating, but it isn't necessarily a disaster either. I have a set of AS&M's with HPC cera-metallic coating, and the previous owner had an EGT bung welded on less than an inch from the #7 exhaust port. After 9 years, used on two different cars, there's no real problem at the weld. Obviously the area has been welded, but its not rusting out or anything.

With the O2 sensors, you're on the collectors, and the temperatures are a lot lower than right at the head. You should be able to touch up the weld area with some high temperature silver paint, and it should last for quite a while. The tubing is so thin that you can't put a lot of heat into it when you are welding, or you'll burn right through it.

If you are worrying about it peeling or flaking when u drill it i dont know the answer but if thats not the case then i can say that I jet hot coated my dragster exaust, and it reaches temperatures of 1300 degrees according to the censor thats stuck into the pipe, and it doesnt crack or peal at all. The initial drilling i cant guarentee anything but after its in there should be no problems, there hasent been anyproblems whatsoever for me.
