  • tune up needed? and cost?

The ragtop has 104,000 miles on it, and I have noticed for about 5,000 or so miles that when accelerating in 1st and second-as the revs increase-I seem to hit a flat spot where I feel like I am losing power. Other than that, still get good mileage (28-29 highway)

I'm wondering if I may need new plugs? Local shop estimate is $80 for plugs and $225 labor. Given that I have NO facilities to do the work myself, even if I was so inclined, how does the price sound, and do you think this may be my problem?

80 for plugs? My NGK's were like 35 for all 8. My wires were 80 tho. If that includes wires then that's not a bad deal for parts. The labor price doesn't sound too bad to me... I got quoted $500 for plugs and wires, labor alone. I think... Doing it yourself it def. a PITA, it'll take you a whole day, depending on a few things. What's $225 worth to you? If it's worth it to pay 225 for something that's gonna take you a whole day, maybe into the next day, just pay to have it done.

But back to the question, I think that's a decent deal on labor.

I had mine done last month. Plugs and wires along with an oil change and new fuel filter ran me about 225. Runs a bit smoother.

Changing the plugs on an LS1 is a bit easier than an LT1 but the biggest issue is cylinder #8 - same as the LT1. I think the price is fair but just make sure it is a good shop. I have heard horror stories of shops charging for work that they did not do. Maybe you could ask for your old plugs back to make sure they were all changed. A lot of shops will not change cylinder 8.

do it yourself...sure it'll take6-8 hours of work time and 3-4 hours of just figuring out how to get them all. I did it myself and came out with plenty of busted knuckles, scraped skin, and a slew of unknow cuss words, but it's all worth it knowing you did it right. Besides, it's a bonding experience...plus you try to figure out what the hell GM was thinking in the process.
