  • ujoint question

On the rear ujoint, at the diff there are 2 bearing caps that bolt into the rearend with 2 bolts each. Here is my question....

on my car there was a flimsy flat piece of metal that connected the 2 bearing caps. It is about 2 inshes long by 3/8 wide and has little feet that fit under a couple c-ring on the caps. The little feet holding them have broken and they are destroyed.

Is this piece necessary?? I've never seen one before and my Haynes manual does not mention it. I'm tempted to just leave it out. It is to flimsy to be structural in any way. Maybe it was just a temporary piece at the factory to prevent the caps from falling off the ujoint before it was attached to the rearend??

    I'm baffled.

yep, just for factory assembly, so Jacque didn't have to scramble all over the floor collecting needler bearings.
