  • Need a set of ramps.....

    I'm going to get a set of ramps for my car this weekend. What do you all use? I'm not lowered or anything, but from what I've seen most ramps don't have the clearence needed for these cars.

    My car is stock height and my ramps won't go under them.

    Several years ago I saw a 2 piece ramp for low cars. It was a short one that you would drive up on, then attach a higher one and drive from the low one to the high one. I have no idea where I saw them.

      don't bet on it broh...no ramps will fit, unless you want to see your front end pop right off...I bearly can get ramps up under my GTA...i just use jack and get em on jackstands...our front end is too long

        I bought a set of those black plastic ramps from auto zone, and I can get the car on them if they dont slide around. They always want to push forward instead of allowing the car to drive up. I have a formula though (no ground effects).

          I've seen recomendations for rhino ramps. I'll just take my car to autozone and place them next to the car to see if they'll work.

          On the ramps sliding forward....get a cement block or two to place in front of them....should solve the problem.

            Go to Pep Boys... They sell a set of Black Plastic ramps that work great. They have rubber on the bottom so they wont move when you drive up them. I LOVE THEM!!! They are great for Camaros and Birds. I used them with my 91 RS and my 95 Z28.

              I have the plastic ones similar to the autozone/Pep Boys and my 96 TA has no problems. They're tough too. I put my K5 on them without hesitation.

                The Rhino Ramps work great, no problem. Usually Auto Zone and Pep Boys carry them.

                  The secret with keeping the ramps from sliding is to only use the hand brake. Cars have a foreward brake bias and when you use the traditional foot brake, the fronts lock quickly and cause the ramps to slide. Go up and down only using the handbrake and no more sliding.

                    Thats what they were....Rhino ramps. They slide. I will try Joes methos next time. Sounds good.

                      I have the Rhino ramps to carry in my truck when I tow to the track. Got them on sale for $20 at Poop Boys....

                      I also have a set of heavy duty Sears ramps, that have 10" lift, and are wide enough to fit a 275 tire (the 315's hang over the edges a bit ). But the ramps are so steep that I had to make up a pair of "steps" out of 2x10 lumber. The bottom step is about 30" long and the top step is about 15" long. The bottom of the ramp sits in a groove on the steps. My car would go up the ramps even in the days when the front end was lowered 1.8".

                        Thats not when the ramps slide on me. I used to have a problem where as I was driving up the ramp, the ramp would shoot foward because of the wedge effect. The rubber on the bottom holds it in place while I am driving up the ramp.

                          I'm tellin ya....... been there, done that. Put the car in drive, use the parking brake to keep the car from rolling and ease up the ramp while modulating the parking brake. Just make sure the concrete is dry. Same thing goes for backing off. If not, as soon as you back up the ramp shoots foreward and the front end drops quickly. Stupid design to have to resort to these tricks to keep them in place. There is definately not enough rubber on the bottom.

                            I've been looking for some ramps and wondered myself which ones would work the best.

                            I've seen some in Canadian Tire, they are made out of used tires. Seemed pretty sturdy to me. Not sure if they are the as the plastic ones you guys are referring to. Everytime I went there they had only one of them so I never bothered to check whether they would work.

                            Is it save to work under the car with the ramps?

                            One other thing I wondered, how to get the car onto stands?

                            Which is better? Stands or ramps?

                              Ramps will slide on smooth concrete, even without the brakes. On rough concrete or asphalt, I haven't had a problem. In my garage where the concrete is smooth, it is near impossible to not push the ramps. So what I did for the times when I had to get it on ramps in the garage is make 2 small squares of plywood with a 2" screw thru the middle of each. I drilled holes in the garage floor and I just set the little squares down with the screws in the holes and put the front edge of the ramps up against them - these work as ramp locaters & stops. When my car is on ramps in the garage, there is only 3" in front and 3" behind it due to all the toolboxes & workbench, so it is a good system for my situation.

                              My first set of ramps were standard ramps with 2" cut off the bottoms all the way around - they worked OK. Then someone came out with ramps that have little helper ramps that get the car up on these little plastic wedges then onto the main ramp. They lock onto the holes in the ramp so everything stays put. Can't remember the brand name, but I bought them at Farm & Fleet. The ramps are yellow with a 4-piece black plastic helper ramp which was bought separately, but made to go with the ramps.
