  • Need some tech info

    for a 1972-1973 400 V8(Chevy), what is the torque specs on the main bearing cap bolts? i have a brand new torque wrench and lubiplate(sp?) so id like to get the crank in and work on the pistons

    next question is for the same motor, i wanna run a roller camshaft, i kno i need a small base circle cam, but what do i need to conver to roller? besides cam button, wear plate and retainer? thanx guys

    If they are the 2.65" bearings, 65 lb/ft with lube.

    Obviously you will need the roller cam, then you will also need retro-fit roller lifters with the vertical lifter guides for the pre-roller blocks, lifter guide retainer(spider), matched valve springs, retainers, valve locks, valve stem seals, timing set, a roller-cam button, and shorter pushrods.

    All the major valvetrain companies sell the complete kits. They are right around $1000.

      thanx fast, ? tho, how do i kno what size the bearings are? the crank has never been ground and its a 2 bolt 400

        You can just mic the main bore. The 350's had a 2.6401" main bore +/-.002, and the 400's had a 2.8401" main bore +/- .002". You can tell the difference by eye.

        I am fairly certain that all factory SBC 400's came with 2.65" main bearings.
