So this weekend I'm going to undertake the monumental task of replacing the water pump in my 97 LT1. While I'm down there I'm going to go ahead and hit the optispark as well. I have a Chilton book and a Haynes as well but does anyone have any tips/tricks/pitfalls they can add?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Replace the seals in the front timing cover while you are in the neighborhood.

There are 3... one for the crank hub, one for the water pump and another for the opti.

When placing the Opti over the cam dowel pin, be sure you put the pin in the correct hole on the back of the Opti. You wouldn't believe how many people manage to install it with the pin in the wrong hole. Normal response is "how could it be wrong, it only fits one way?". Actually, its very easy to put it together incorrectly.

As usual, Shoebox's Tech Pages have a lot of helpful information:

After everything my husband and I have been through (opti #2), I would go ahead and do your plug wires, too. Since everything was open down there, it was nice and clean to route the new ones. Just a suggestion! Oh, check the connector that plugs in at the top of the opti for wear. That was a problem for me after opti #2 was installed and my car didn't start. Thanks to the wonderful fellas on here for suggesting I check this!

Be careful when reinstalling the timing cover. The water pump driveshaft seal has a tendency to flip itself inside out if it isn't slid carefully over the water pump driveshaft.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the problem is with seal tearing, not flipping itself inside out. Whatever the case, it's definetly a problem you want to avoid unless you want to do it all over again. I recommend that you remove the radiator fan assembly. Just two electrical connectors and the assembly un-hooks from the radiator. This will give you all the clearance you need to get the job done. Good Luck!
