How big is the gas tank on a 2000 trans am... i need to test how many miles per gallon i get because my gas guage plays tricks on me all the time. Itll be at 1/2 then when i turn it off and restart it itll be at 3/8. It never stays accurate.

      A gas tank for a 2002 is 16.8 gallons. Shouldn't be a difference.

If you just need your mpg than fill up your tank and reset your trip meter. The next time you fill up take your milage and divide it by the gas put into the tank.

The gas guages on these cars were never that good. The pre-99 cars had a metal tank that was 15.7 gallons. 1999 and later were composite tanks with 16.8 gallon capacity. Guages for both weren't good. I always try to fill up when I get to 1/4 tank.

GM gauges are notoriously inaccurate. I've owned countless GM's, and I never trusted a single one after 1/2 tank. From my understanding, it's the floater that gives the inaccurate read. Someone else here could probably confirm that better than I.

Yeah, unfortunately my rotten gas gauge got me one time. I ran out of gas but my gauge told me I had still 1/4 tank. I never let the gauge go below 1/2 tank now! I figure if it says 3/4, that = 1/2 tank of gas.

Mine is as accurate as the shape of the tank. The first half takes forever to go down and the second half is gone before you know it. But its accurate, the light comes on at 2 gallons and when it comes on, it takes a little over 14 gallons to fill it up.

The gas tanks of F-bodys are 'V' shaped in cross section so that then you fill up it will stay towards full most of the time but the gage will go down faster as it gets near empty.
