  • Mystery Part...

    Ok gents, here's a puzzle:

When replacing the window motor I noticed this part was sitting loose on the bottom inside the door. I noticed it briefly when I replaced a speaker last year, but never got around to asking about it. Now I haven't noticed any ill effects, but still I'm wondering, What the heck is it???

According to the parts cd that I have, its listed as a "Bumper, front s/d lower". Judging by the diagram on the cd (item #107) it looks like its on the bottom towards the front of the door. It had 3 different parts numbers: #10274366, #20376242, #20376243. Its part of the group 10 parts group. Hope this helps.

Door Glass - Rattle in Full Down Position

File in Section: 10 - Body

        Bulletin No.: 43-10-57

        Date: December, 1994

        Subject:
Door Glass Rattle in Full Down Position (Install New Down Stop Bumper)

        Models:
        1993-95 Chevrolet Camaro
        1993-95 Pontiac Firebird

        VINs AFFECTED:
1995 Chevrolet Camaro before VIN S2128425
1995 Pontiac Firebird before VIN S2210340

        CONDITION
Some owners of early 1995 (and past model, 1993-94) may have door glass that rattles in the full down position, usually when closing the door. 1995 models (after the VIN breakpoints listed above) have a new down stop bumper attached to the bottom of the door that limits glass movement.

        CORRECTION
Customer comments about this condition on past model (1993,1994 and early 1995) can be improved by creating a new attachment slot in the door lower surface and installing the new bumper as indicated in the following procedure.

        PROCEDURE

Materials Required: GM P/N 10274366 Down Stop Bumper

        1. Remove the door trim as described in Section 10-6 of the Service Manual, and carefully remove the door mounted speaker/housing assembly.

        Right Side Template

        2. Locate the template to the bottom of the door, and drill a pilot hole at the front and rear hole locations.

Important: Prior to drilling holes in the bottom of the door, raise the door glass to the full up position.

        3. Create the bumper mounting slot using the following steps:

        a. Drill the front hole using a 16.0 mm (5/8) bit.

        b. Drill the rear hole using a 9.0 mm (23/64) bit.

        c. Create the slot portion between the holes using either a die grinder, saber saw, cut off wheel or other suitable tool.

        4. Install the new down stop bumper, Part No. 10274366 in the slot.

Note: A light coating of a soap solution will act as a lubricant when installing the bumper.

        5. Reinstall the speaker/housing assembly and the door trim panel.

There is a slot in the botom of the door. That rubber part goes in the slot. When the window is in full down position it will rest on the rubber.

Ok...mystery solved. Next time I have the door panel off I may stick it back in.

Here's a quote from Rob that I just found:
I guess you mean to add additional bumpers to the bottom of the door? That bumper part should already be there. I know lately, a few people have found them just laying in the bottom of the door.
Apparently there were some cars from earlier years that didn't come with it, but they've also been known to fall out on occassion.

That's why I love this board with a passion. Something obscure like this and someone pops up with the answer. You guys (and gals) are tops.

Dang, I answered this question yesterday on my "garage" computer, but it crashed after posting. I guess the post never made it, lol.
