  • '95 Z28 auto trans troubles

Hello everyone! My '95 Z28 (4L60E) slips/bangs when shifting from 1st to 2nd. But, if I let off the gas pedal completely right before it shifts, it won't make any noise, instead shifting great. In addition to this, if I hit the gas too hard in 2nd gear it will pop out of gear and just rev until I stop pressing the pedal.

Does anyone know of any problems inherit to this trans? Is this a valve body problem, or somethingn deeper?

    Thanks for your help.

broken transmission mount. Very common. Don't get one from the local car parts store. Mine didn't last 6 months before it broke again. I got the one for the Caprice classic police car and it seams to be holding up fine. The poly mounts are very hard. They will never break but it transmit a LOT of vibration to the frame. I couldn't stand it after 2 weeks and got the Caprice car one.

    For part numbers and info.

That part sounds like the tranny mount alright.

That part doesn't sound good at all. I doubt the tranny mount has any impact here, this sure sounds like an internal part going south.

        Time for a rebuild.........

My Formula started doing that. I was broke and tried driving on it like that and it just got worse untill the tranny wouldn't shift out of third and you could barely give it any throttle without it cming out of gear. Ended up tearing the tranny up bad and cost alot for a rebuild becuase alot of "hard parts" got torn up. I would suggest taking it to reputable tranny shop as soon as possible. Do not drive on it unless you are going to the tranny shop or you will pay much more for a rebuild. I wish I had done this. If a rebuild is in order check about just getting a new rebuilt tranny put in or do it yourself if you can. It ended up costing more to rebuild my tranny then I could have ordered a rebuilt one from an online shop. Good Luck

OOPS, I missed the second part. That doesn't sound good. It doesn't sound like an easy fx.

Sounds internal ....although a little odd on the 1-2 shift for the 4l60E. A good rebuild should cost around 1000-1500 with removal and installation. If it needed hard parts (ie. gears, drums, etc), it could cost much more, but if its just slipping (or dropping out of gear), a soft part rebuild usually does the trick. If your handy, you may save some money by pulling the unit yourself and bringing it in. May save 300 bucks or more.

Find somebody who is knowledgeable with the 4L60 and have him install a shift kit and put an extra clutch in the 3-4 pack. An external tranny cooler helps tremendously too. These mods will give you a few more miles on the next one.
