I have to have the gears and the bearings replaced in my rearend this week(second time I have had to fix it) and was given two quotes by a guy I know that owns a shop. He'll get a used one with the same gear ratio and inspect it and install it for $685, or I can have him rebuild my current one for $930. Do you guys think that these prices are fair and which is the better option?

Well, when I had my 2.73's replaced in my 96 Z28 I paid $347 for the install. I also got new Strange Series 2 3.42's ($225), and a Ratech Deluxe Install Kit (rebuild kit $130) and synthetic oil ($15). There was an online ordering discount of $20 at thunderracing.com. So all told, it was a little over $700. I think the shop charged 5 hours labor at $65/hour.
If you look around, you might find a better price.Joe K.

Actually, now that I think about it, GM Motive gears are usually a little less expensive and shops add a little to their price for profit. I'd ask him to break out the labor and parts prices for a better comparison.Joe K.

As far as swapping in a used rear, you should be able to get one for $200-300 and you can install it yourself in 2 hours, with minimal tools. I have an online procedure for a rear axle assembly swap if you are interested.
Thunder sells the Motive gears for $190. It would be a good opportunity to change the rear axle ratio for some added street performance
Both your quotes sound a bit "pricey".Fred

Seems to me I paid $250 labor to have it done with the supplied gears, bearings, basically everything excepting the physical posi unit itself which was untouched. All the axle bearings, seals, etc. were done as well as the new ring and pinion set up for that labor charger. The guy even had to slice a shim to get just the right backlash. That was a couple years ago, that might equate to $300 now. You now could probably do some parts searching and see what you come up with.
