Shift kits cost about $100 or more and they firm up the shifts on an automatic transmission. You can also get them to make the trans into manual shift only.

A stock transmission slips a lot when it shifts - that makes it seem smooth - most people want that. Slippage causes heat and wear. Shift kits get rid of a lot of the slippage and fix certain other weaknesses and might make the trans last longer in a performance application.
