  • 1/4 mile times with 454????

Hey my cousin is getting a 1969 Chevelle with a 454 in it. The 454 engine is all built up, it has a high rise intake manifold, headers, a pretty hot cam, stall converter, so it's built up pretty good. But i was wondering if anyone would know what this would do in the 1/4 mile??????????????

HArd to say, there are still alot of unknown variables. Carburator size, rear end, cam specifics, but it's probably pretty quick.

SFC( not sure what kind), drilled/slotted rotors, K&N air filter, all free mods, 3" Borla cat back exaust, electric exaust cut out, NGK spark plugs, royal purple motor oil, and Zaino .Maybe more. I find more stuff done to it everytime I look at it.

yea i'm not sure about the specifics like the specs of the cam, and the gears it has, but the owner says it is a beast, so i bet it's very fast. I just want to know the 1/4 mile times because my cousins dad might not let him get it if it's too fast. lol

          Guess

If its a well done car with the right heads, roller cam and rockers, good single plane intake, with an 850-1050 carb, decent rear and good slicks. It should run between 10.5-11.5 in the 1/4. Or 6.70-7.40 in the 1/8th. There are still many variables in any combo but that should be in the ballpark. Here is an example of something similar. 72 Nova BB468, good heads, roller cam and rockers, 4.56 gears, 4500 stall, glide, headers, 16" slicks, 2 fours. ran 10.57 in the 1/4 on a 90+ degree day.

The suspension will make or break it. When someone lists a crapload of engine mods and doesn't say anything about the suspension & chassis build, all I'm wondering if it is going to do anything at the track but spin & wheelhop. Not that killer engines aren't cool.

14 seconds, just a guess, based on the weight of the car.

I am always astonished at how everyone thinks the cars of the muscle car era were heavier.......they were LIGHTER!

The 1968-1969 Chevelle small block cars weighed in right around 3300 lbs. In 1970, when Chevy put the first 454 in a production Chevelle, they weighed about 3550 lbs.....the same as an average 4th Gen F-Body and they ran a mid 13 right off the show room floor.

Only one way to find out what she runs...........go run'er!

Would you tell someone your car is slow if you were trying to sell it? Just because someone tells you its a beast and very fast doesnt mean it is. A beast to me is a street car that puts 1000 HP to the wheels. A beast to some is a Civic with bolt ons.

I dont dowbt that but generally speaking, those chevelles are notoriously heavy, as my dad tells me that thats why he built a 64' chevelle, and that no one builds superstockers outof 71' chevelles. As for that unless its like a real racecar your not going to see big numbers outof it, if it makes 400 hp ull get into the 12's but unless you have like really trick heads or sumthing its not gunna go 10s (usually)

Here's some excerpts from a Chevelle web site. Pretty much as FastTA stated. The LS6 desscribed below was best case power for one of these - the other more common engines engines weren't near this powerful. Back then, though, they did soup up the cars they sent to be tested. But assuming the guy built a big block similar to the LS-6, then, if he knows how to drive, he might just do OK.

                      http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z1976/default.aspx

"For 1970, production was down to just below 53,600 Chevelle SS's. However, horsepower was up, way up. The horsepower ranged from 350 to 450 horsepower from the 402 and 454 powerplants. With the LS6 454 engine, the vehicle could race from zero-to-sixty in just over 6 seconds. The quarter mile could be reached in 13.7 seconds.

The 454 cubic-inch engine in the Chevelle LS-6 is the most potent powerplant ever placed in a production muscle car, producing 450 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque."

I'm not sure you got it. Chevelles are NOT notoriously heavy. 3300 lbs is by no means heavy. The '71's were the lightest of the bunch at 3250 lbs with the small block cars.
