  • Need help with exhaust questions...

    Hey everyone,
I am having a couple problems with my exhaust. My car is a 91 RS 305TBI. I have an Edelbrock TES header system, Maganflow High-Flow 3" Cat & an American Thunder Catback.

    Question #1:
I am thinking my cat is either hollowed out or failed. Does anyone have any expierence with Maganflow Cats? Do they usually last? What is a good quality replacement? I would love an OEM one, but they are major $$$. Here are my symptoms that lead me to the believe that the converter is bad:
-Exhaust STINKS!! Not like rotten eggs, its just a really potent exhaust smell. It will start to make your feel sick after a while.
-Crackiling under light acceleration & engine braking that wasnt there when the cat was new.

    Question #2:
How do you reduce header tick? I CANT STAND IT!! Whenever I am crusing or lightly accelerating, all I hear is tick, tick, tick, tick.... And it pretty loud. It Makes the car sound like a piece of crap.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Mark B

For your first question are you sure that your not having engine problems like your just running too rich which could make your exhaust smell more and possibly get everything in your exhaust hotter? I don't know too much but I was just wondering if you looked into other possible problems
94 Formula Firebird, 355, heads port and polished, cc503 cam, 30# injectors, PCMforless Tune, B&M 2400 stall, K&N CAI, BBK Sorty Headers, Magnaflow Highflow Cat, Borla Catback exhaust with electronic cutout.

Did you use auality gaskets for the header install? You also have to tighten the bolts on the headers from the center outward. Check all underside connections too. Sometimes the leaks can be spotted with black running out whereever the leak is. Also you have to go back and retighten the header bolts after one or two frst heat cycles.

I beleive that the leak causes the car to run very rich, which might lead to your first problem which was the smell.
