  • Your opinion on new exhaust upgrade?

My muffler is going on my '97 Firebird V6 and I am using this opportunity to not only replace the failing muffler but completely upgrade my exhaust system! I am trying to get as throtty sounding of exhaust as I can and a friend directed me towards Flowmaster naturally! However I am torn between choosing the original 40 series and the newer Super 40 which seems to be performance wise a tad better. He said that the Super 40 would be too much on my 6er but do any of you guys have any comments to this or suggestions on the Super 40 or original 40? This takes care of my muffler replacement but now the complete upgrade...

I was going to go with Magnaflow Magnapack headers, pipes, and hi-flow converter to pair with the flowmaster finished off with a magnaflow oblong style exhaust tip that is reminiscent of the stock one I was content with lol. All in all what do you guys think of this set-up for my car and any suggestions on the Super 40 I wish to go with or the original 40 that I am advised to stay with? Thank you!

V6s do not share the same flow and sound characteristics that a v8 does. If you put a traditional flowmaster on that engine, it's going to get raspy in the higher rpms and the cruise drone will get annoying. Some like it, I don't. So far, the best sounding V6 systems that I have heard are magnaflow and a borla rear section which is what I have on my 94 V6. My system consists of a V8 intermediate pipe from the cat back to the muffler, from there it's a borla muffler back system from a 93-95 Z28. This isn't the catback system, this is a muffler and tailpipes only. It's not as openly aggressive and a catback borla so you don't get a raspy scream as the rpms rise. It's a velvety muffled V8 type of tone. this system rocks for a v6 and you'll come out much cheaper.

    just a suggestion..............

What would happen if I put a stock Z28 dual exhuast (just the muffler) on to my V6. I have the thing sitting in my shed Thanks

It works just fine. Better flowing than a stock V6 exhaust, a little more throaty but can get a bit raspy above 3K rpms if you don't have a cat. You'll need to have a muffler shop adapt it, the intermediate pipe size is different.

I have all of the piping from the cat to the exhaust. Is the size of the pipe that connects to the V6 cat larger that than the v8 cat?

Thanks for the suggestion Joe. I have written flowmaster about this question of mine and I hope they can tell me if I am wise in prefering the Super 40 over the original. I am only used to the sound of my stock cat and a flowmaster on my friends Mitsubishi 3000GT which I like how it sounds! Honestly if they had more V6 clips ESPECIALLY for F-bodies that I could listen to maybe I could draw a better choice from the many brands out there. I know that you can't get a V8 sound out of an exhaust for a V6 but as long as I get something powerful sounding that you can hear from a distance to let you know that I AM COMMING (!!) thats what I really want!
