  • stall convertor vs. exhaust

I have saved about $850.00 for my next modification for the T/A. I am trying to decide the next bang for my buck. I am trying to decide between mid-length headers and y-pipe or go with a 2500 stall convertor and a shift kit. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Suggestions on brands, too. Also, I am fairly new to upgrades on the LS1. Other than the mods I have listed, any other suggestions for slight hp gains would be appreciated. I have seen mods on other threads that show TB bypass, etc. What are these?

I have also changed my mind from a HPIII to a PCMforless program. Great suggestion!

i think you'd get the most gratification out of the exhaust. It sounds so wicked. The shift kit would be sweet, but it can wait. Exhaust should be everyones first upgrade. Make it sound cool, then do the rest

Stall, hands down if you are going for performance.

You should probably go a little bigger than that though. Talk to a stall vendor about your setup (and future setup) and get the right converter.

I agree that if you are looking for all out performance, go for the stall no doubt. I would go at least 3000 though. 2500 is not really worth the effort. 3000 will still be plenty street friendly.

Headers and full exhaust do wake up an LS1 very nicely, but those can be done as your next mod.

If I go with the 3000 stall, should I need the Transmission Cooler? I have seen references that say anything above 3000 they recommend a cooler. Which brand of stall would you recommend?

Yes, you will need an external trans cooler. Looser converters put a little more heat into the trans via the front pump.

You could go with the typical condenser mounted B&M or Hayden, but I persoanlly like the fram rail type mounted cooler better. Perma Cool makes some nice frame rail mounted coolers.

I like the way this guy placed his Perma Cool cooler:
