I have a problem with my distributor gear in my camaro...Heres the story...

About two years ago I installed an LT4 hotcam kit in my 1994 z28 camaro. I replace everything, down to rebuilding the trans and rear end. Basically the drivetrain was like new. When the car had right around 5,000 miles on the new engine trouble happened. I was traveling down a two lane highway at about 55 mph (ditches on both sides of the road, no breakdown lane.) When my check guages light came on and I had ZERO oil pressure! I had to drive about 1/2 a mile before I could get to a safe place to pull over. (I know it was horrible on the engine, but it was either that or get run over by a semi!) When I got the car back home, I pulled the intake and found that ALL of the teeth on the distributer gear were chewed up. I figured it was due to the hot cam. I decide then it would be a good time to once again tear the engine down and do a stroker set up. No expense was spared, new hoses, new block, heads, ported intake, you name it, it was done.) Once I had the car computer tuned, she run like a dream and sounded wicked. Well I took her to a car show and was sitting in the wal-mart parking lot when I cranked her up, and suddenly, check guages and zero oil pressure AGAIN. I turned her off and hauled her home. Guess what, big surprise, all the teeth on the distributor gear are once again chewed off. So my question is this...What kind of distributer gear should I install that the cam wont chew up? The cam end play is .003, only thing I can figure is there has to be a different cam gear for this set up. I called comp cams and they said that they have run into this problem before, but that they really didn't have a solution for me. What should I do. I'm to the point where I may just go back to a stock or smaller cam. Although I would rather not because the bad boy that's in her now is wicked!! What to do?!?!?

Sure sounds cam gear related since it happenned both times with the same exact cam, although that cam is compatable with the stock oil pump drive. I'd suspect something funny with that cam. What oil pumps and oil were you running when you first did the hot cam and then for stroker build?

I have used a new melling oil pump in both engines, hot cam using 10/30 Mobile, and Stroker using 5/30 Mobile 1.

        Same exact cam, though, right?

The stub shaft can be tricky. It's not uncommon to not properly seat the plastic arm/bracket of the stub shaft squarely to the block. Even though it may seem engaged with the oil pump driveshaft and oil pump, you still sometimes have to turn the motor to get the flimsy plastic arm of the stub shaft to seat squarely down on the block.

If you are certain you have done this, then it could be bad stub shaft gear on the camshaft itself.

Thanks for the info. I am having a hard time believing that either of these are my problem. I am sure that the drive is seating properly. I also have had 2 different cams (1 GM and 1 comp) in it and 2 different drives(GM). I am hoping that may be someone makes a hardened gear that will fix my problem. Heck I just don't know anymore! I am beginning to like my old stock set up! At least I didn't have to push it home. Thanks for the reply.
