    I wasn't using the dipstick as a gauge. I was using it as a level indicator all along, but I was under the impression it should only be in the crosshatched area if the tranny fluid is hot.

      Yes, ideally you will want the fluid to be within the cross-hatched area when fully warm, which is considered to be 176 deg F(80 deg C.)
