  • Power Steering Coolers

A friend of mine is for some reason wanting to put a power steering cooler on his Firebird. Hes running a 93 V6 Firebird like myself. Since hes not racing it, I think its really pointless. I didnt think the coolers from a V8 would work on a V6...is it possible that it would? what if any benefits would it give? Sounds like a waste of time and money to me....other than to have something to draw attention to.

I think the PS coolers were added to the LS1 cars, perhaps as an option. I don't know the details, but I doubt there are any significant differences between the cooler for a V6 and a V8. May take a little bit of creativiy to locate all the parts correctly, but power steering fluid is not "engine specific".

Hundreds of thousands of 4th Gen F-Bodys were built without PS coolers, and I don't recall any unusual rate of failures on the systems. I think the cooler is mainly for people who Auto-X and put heavy loads on the system.

Since nobody else has chimed in, I'll give it a shot. I don't have personal experience with these, but having read f-body boards for years, I haven't seen many recommendations for PS coolers. The only place I could see it being of any practical use is auto crossing...either that or road racing.

What I would suggest, if your buddy has an auto, is to get a tranny cooler. This will most definitely extend the life of your transmission. Auto's are very suseptible to high operating temperatures.
