Wonder if that guy ever drove a Turbo charged car?
97 Trans Am A4 more or less stock (Mods: WS6 Ram Air with Fernco & K&N, 12 disc CD changer, power antenna, SLP Fan Switch, LS1 Aluminum DS, Borla Cat back, McCord power plate, Spohn tower brace, Sirius, HID fog lights)
what's the difference between a supercharger and a turbo? I know the visual difference but what is the performance difference. Turbo looks like a snail and the supercharger goes where a blower would go right?
A supercharger is a blower. The main difference is how they provide boost. A blower uses the motor's belt system to compress the air, whereas a turbo uses the motor's exhaust gas to compress the air.
My mechanic said that with 130000 miles on an LT1, it would totally ruin the car if I put a supercharger on. Would it be okay to put like a small turbo on it then? And can you put a turbo and a supercharger?
I've always wanted a supercharged car, and now I'm going to have to rebuild the motor or put in a new one to do it.
I noticed on a corvette I saw, it had a turbo right by the rear wheel on the exhaust pipes. What's the deal with that how does it work?
[Ice, using both a blower and a turbo would require a lot of setup, esp. switching between the turbo and the blower. Just stick with one. At 130k mi., its really going to depend on the quality of the internals and how much boost you plan on running. As we already discussed earlier, a low-boost blower could probably be run without any problems. What your mechanic is trying to get at, however, is you would be better off spending the money in other areas first (rebuilding the motor, etc.). I would stick with this and worry about the blower after you do your rebuild.
Do you think doing a rebuild would cost less than a decent turbo? I'm just looking at getting some more power cuz ever since that tune up I had, the car has been slower. I NEED SPEED. But my mechanic did say something about putting the money where I need it for now and doing more super high performance stuff later on. The thing is I don't know exactly where I need the money. Shoud it go towards finishing my suspension and doing the rebuild?
There is a Turbo that mounts where the muffler goes in a Camaro. It then has a long tube going to the intake, which also helps cool the charge. It takes away all the clutter that comes from installing a turbo in the engine compartment. Drawbacks are: the intake can drown in wet weather as it is mounted under the car. Poor ground clearance.

What exactly did he do to the car? A tune-up should have the car running better, not worse.

Yes. Slapping a turbo or blower on right now will give you more power, but if you want more boost when you rebuild your motor, you're going to need to upgrade the blower/turbo...kind of a waste of money. Finish what's been started, get the motor rebuilt and go from there.
I don't know what the deal was with the tune up. If was fast as heck when I got it and he replaced all those things and it's a little slower. It's still really fast and it still chirps when going to second but I just notice a little less speed. The only thing I can think of is the plugs. I don't think he put in performance plugs, either that or he put like low quality wiring or something on them. It could have been the kind of oil or fuel filter he used also I suppose.
When I bought it, he did say something about MSD Wires and that was on the list of upgrades. Don't know if those were plug wires or what.
If you don't do much highway driving, change to 4.10 gears. That should give you the feel you're looking for. In reality, I think we only drop .1 off our 1/4 mile times by switching from 3.42's to 4.10's, but I'm told they help slam you back in your seat. I think you said you have headers and a cat back in your last post, so that's one less thing to worry about. You can get a mail order tune from madz28.com or pcmforless.com. That will pick up some power. I think Fred has said you'll get about 15 horsepower over a stock tune.
You don't need a power adder for speed. Check out this link- http://eportworks.com/Products.htm
With ported heads and a different cam, you can pick up gobs of power. You'll also need supporting mods to handle the increased intake and exhaust flow. Keep in mind that our stock rear ends are relatively weak, so you're going to have to upgrade eventually. One of these should help some, but it won't make your rear unbreakable.
I'm not sure what your approach is when it comes to building up cars. Some people, myself included, want instant gratification. We're the guys that screw our cars up. Other people say to start from the back of the car and work your way forward. There's no point in having tons of power if your car can't handle it or get it to the ground. This is probably the most intelligent approach. Start with a 12 bolt rear, then upgrade the suspension, then work on adding power. You'll probably be safe if you just add some bolt ons. If you want to add a turbo or supercharger, most people recommend rebuilding the motor with forged internals so that you can handle the power.
Red 95 Trans Am: M6, Moroso CAI, Magnaflow, Spohn sway bars, back to life as of 2/15/10!!!
SOLD- Kinda miss it
94 Del Sol VTEC: 27 city/ 33 highway, knee deep in slowness
SOLD- Good riddance!
2006 Ford Fusion: 2.3, 5 speed, could run 15lbs of boost with a 150 shot and it'd still be slow
