  • VATS problem ?

Well guys, I'm sorry to keep opening new threads for this, but the old ones keep getting buried.

    http://www.f-body.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17564

To sum it up, my engine won't start. The battery is fine, and all the dash lights / headlights / radio come on when I put the key in. However, when I turn the ignition, nothing happens. All the lights on the dash go out except for the "Service Engine Soon" light. I've hooked the car up to a ODBII scanner, with no errors to report. Checked the KEYS Ohm values (953), they are fine.

I want to blame VATS, a faulty ignition cylinder, or the switch which tells the cars computer the clutch is pushed down.

Anyways, I tried the bypass here:
    http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#pass_key

And it didn't work... I think it may have been because the resistance I got wasn't quite perfect.. The key pellet measured 953 exactly, while my little resistor thing only read 951.. But here:

    http://shbox.com/1/vats_bypass.jpg

    He says that:

"To test key and lock cylinder circuit, insert key and unplug connector. Measure resistance back to lock cylinder. A good reading should correspond to the reading on the key pellet."

I tried that and saw that if I hooked the multimeter one way, I got no reading. While if I hooked it up the other way (flipped black / red prongs) I got a reading of -1451 something..

So this tells me my lock cylinder is bad right?

Am I doing something wrong? Does it make any difference that I had the battery and everything hooked up, disconnected the little VATS plug, inserted the key and then measured the resistance? I read somewhere that if the wrong resistance is there, it will read the wrong resistance for like 3 minutes..

I was also wondering if mabey the car doesn't know that I'm depressing the clutch when trying to start it.. I'd imagine there is some sort of switch which will let the car turn over when you press the clutch in. Is there any way that I can check to make sure this switch is working?

Any help is greatly appreciated guys!

Resistance readings are not positive or negative. You must have something set wrong or taking the reading in the presence of power (which you can't do). A key or resistor will work as long as it is in the proper range of resistance. It does not have to be perfect.

The clutch switch can easily be bypassed with a paper clip.

BTW, starting new threads makes it much harder to follow what the heck is going on. Going to the original thread and adding to it is a much better idea.
