  • rear end again

What would I have to do to get a Ford 8.8 inch rear end into my Trans Am? It would need to fit my stock GM 28 spline axles. I'm looking into 3.55 gear posi.

Also Where could I find one.

I found these but used. I'm not familiar with mustang parts.

    "8.8, '99-'04 5 lug disc brake, w/ABS"

"'05-'06, GT V8, 8.8 rearend w/ disc brakes w/ ABS brakes, 3.55 ratio. Measures 66" face of flange to face of flange on brake rotor. "

"'05-'06, GT V8, 8.8 rearend w/ disc brakes w/ ABS brakes, 3.31 ratio. Measures 66" face of flange to face of flange on brake rotor. "

You would use the complete assembly from the Ford.... not mix and match pieces. Its not likely a Ford ABS system is going to use the same sensors and signals as the GM system. The Ford wheel bolt circle is only 4.5" vs the F-Body 4.75" if I recall correctly. The width of a stock 4th Gen 10-bolt, disc brakes, measured from the wheel mounting surface on each side is 64.72"

The rear axle assembly for a 3rd or 4th Gen F-body requires a mount for the torque arm. That means you would have to add a mount to the 8.8-inch rear (fabrication of mount and high quality welding to the axle assembly). But, there is at least one outfit that does the conversion. "Search" the "Drivetrain" forum at CamaroZ28.com for a thread covering the 8.8-inch conversion, and who does it.

I'm just going to get something I dont have to play with to fit in. I wanted to get this one. Is it a good investment at a good price? I've been having trouble just finding full rear ends and this site has a bunch but I don't know what to get.

That's a Ford 9-inch, and that price only includes a "spool", no differential.,, not a lot of fun to drive on the street, as one tire screeches around every corner. By the time you add a limited slip unit, you will be over $2,500.

I don't believe there is an option for ABS on the Moser 9-inch. The 9-inch is overkill on anything under 750HP. It weighs a lot, throws off the driveline geometry because the pinion shaft centerline is 3/4" lower than the stock rear. It has the highest parasitic gear losses of any rear axle assembly - 10%, compared to 7% for the 12-bolt and 5% for the Dana 60. It would probbly require a custom driveshaft length. You would need an aftermarket torque arm, because it offsets the TA mount to one side, off-center compared to the stocker.

What kind of HP are you putting through the rear axle? A 12-bolt or a Dana 60 is a better choice, but even those are for big HP setups, or cars that run with slicks and huge clutch dumps at the track.

Well I'm not running a lot of hp right now but I'm building it up to be able to hold 500+ because after my rebuild, it should be around there.
