  • Pulling Metal Shields Off Spark Plug Wires . . .

I've got arching on #5 & #7 Wires - I suspect it's the metal shields on the wires.

I want to pull the metal shields off and just use the wire by itself to fix the problem. Do you think the end of the wire will fry from the heat? I've got the stock manifolds.

I had to pull mine off due top the same problem, I used Taylor firesleeves to protect the boots, no problems after a couple years use. You'll need to protect the boots with something to reflect away some of the heat.

No. I had to do that to mine for the same reason. I was amazed that they were arching to them since they are not grounded.

okay. So that's one vote for yes and one vote for no.

Jeff, are you saying that I can run the wires without the metal sleeves and they'll be fine??

I've been running them for 2 years without sleeves. No problems.

i pulled the metal shield from wire #8 a couple of weeks ago (or #7 i don't remember). had some terrible arcing on this metal shield, could be heard when idling in traffic. i could not get firesleeves, so i didn't cover the boot. so far, not fried.

Since spark plugs operate based on their ground being the cylinder head/block, the spark plug metal heat shields are grounded via the block as well. So the spark energy traveling through the wire just looks for the path of least resistance and often times it ends up being the metal heat shields instead of the ground electrode on the plug.

You can dumpster the metal heat shields, but it would be a good idea to put some fire sleeves over the wire boots.

I pulled the metal boots off - fixed the problem completely!

I am only going to run like this temporarily until I get some fire sleeves.

It's so good to have the car back up and running again - the new motor sounds great.

                Thanks for your help everyone!

Yeah. I've been so lazy having everyone else work on it - I just sucked-it-up and did it myself.

Thanks for offering your advise and your help - You're awesome!

I hope your move to Florida went well.
