  • Hit or miss, umm miss ;)

Hey guys, first post (or like they say on the radio talk shows "long time, first time"). I've got a '94 Z28 I picked up a while ago that has an apparent engine misfire when warm, and only under 2200 RPM. The car runs fine for 20 minutes or so, then develops a miss, hesitation (hiccup?) at idle and under acceleration until it reaches 2200 RPM then smooths right out. It is especially bad after I drive the car home from work (about 20 - 25 minutes), shut it off for a few minutes, then start it up to go somewhere. It seems as if something is getting heat-soaked.

The engine is stock; it's had a K&N air inlet installed and flowmaster after-cat exhaust (except when I look under there, doh! no cat to be found). The engine doesn't overheat - runs right around 195 when warm, the fans are both working (a fan switch mod has been installed by a previous owner). Radiator is new along with the water pump. It has the Del-Teq system installed with new plugs and wires.

I did find that when I got the car, the K&N filter element was not clamped onto the ducting and had fallen off (who knows how long it was off) and the rubber "elbow" leading to the throttle body was not installed right - the bottom of it was pinched in letting in unfiltered air.

I really enjoy reading the posts here, and appreciate the knowledge here. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction!!!

    Mike,

What kind of mileage? Most misfire related issues are typically traced to a tired ignition system, but could be EGR system, fuel system, could be any number of things. Is the car giving you an SES light?

The car's got 141,000 miles and has never set the SES light on...I hope it's not the ignition, unless it's the optical sensor??
