  • Possible Coolant Issue

I can't figure out if I have a leak. I changed my thermostat (stock) and filled up the coolant with dexcool mix to the neck of the radiator and then the overflow tank. A day later, before driving and when it was cold, I opened the radiator cap and again, the level was down. I added more - not sure exactly how much - until the level was again at the neck.

As far as operation, it seems to be ok. the temp gauge warms up as normal and there is hot heat from the heater. I do not see any dripping inside the car, or under the car, and of the parts are wet such as the water pump, hoses, or radiator. So there is no visible sign of a leak.

Why would the level be low? Where could it be going? Or is it normal for the level to contract like that?

Sometimes not all of the air gets out when you fill it up. As you drive small air pockets may move around and escape. That at least is what happened to me. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

if you completely drained the system of coolant .. and then added ... when the thermostat opened up then some of your coolant started movin around and through the water pump and that might be where that coolant went. I would check again in a couple of days and see if you are low again or .. when i though i had a problem ... I parked the car in my driveway, let her warm up and allowed the system to move the coolant around, then shut her off. Then i moved my car 15 minutes later or so and looked on the ground if i had a leak. that what i did in my case .. hope it helps.
